New Delhi, July 12: The CPI(M) Politburo is likely to take a final decision on the Kerala crisis on Sunday, on the concluding day of its two-day central committee meet.

It is believed that in a bid to end infighting in its Kerala unit, CPI(M) Politburo is understood to have recommended removal of Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan from the top decision-making body and lesser punishment of censure for his critic and party state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan for alleged organisational lapses.

The recommendations were placed before the central committee yesterday evening when it met to douse factional fire in its Kerala unit whose top leaders Achuthanandan and Vijayan are at loggerheads.

Sources said the party central committee is likely to drop Achuthandan from Politburo but will allow him to continue as Chief Minister though a section of the leaders opposed to him demanded strong action against the 86-year-old leader for his alleged utterances against the party.

"We are not interested in provoking masses or cadre by taking strong action against the Chief Minister. But he is likely to face disciplinary action. He is likely to be demoted from Politburo," a senior party leader said.

Sources said the Politburo had held Vijayan responsible for "organisational lapses" and he may escape with lesser punishment like censure.
