Chennai: The AIADMK today urged the Tamil
Nadu government to provide "maximum protection" to party
supremo Jayalalithaa, following a death threat issued to the
Opposition Leader.

In identical letters to Chief Secretary and Principal
Home Secretary, AIADMK Treasurer and deputy legislature party
leader, O Panneerselvam and headquarters secretary K A
Sengottaiyan also demanded action on the death threat,
received at pro-AIADMK television channel Jaya TV recently.

In the letter, released to the media, they said that
the opposition leader, enjoying `Z plus` security, has been
issued a death threat -- a complaint against which had already
been filed with the DGP.

"We request you to direct police to take immediate
action on the complaint and provide maximum security to
Jayalalithaa," they said.

On August 28, Jaya TV received a letter in which the
sender warned Jayalalithaa to cancel her proposed Madurai
rally next month and threatened to kill her and her followers
in a bomb attack if she went ahead with it.

With elections scheduled for next May, Jayalalithaa
has been going on a virtual campaign spree, organising public
meetings at Coimbatore and Tiruchirappally, which attracted
huge crowds.
