New Delhi: Water resources secretary Alok Rawat has been appointed as the head of the Committee of Secretaries (CoS) which will prepare a plan for cleaning and rejuvenating the Ganges, reports said on Friday.

As part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s mission to clean up the Ganges, the government today set up a CoS whose job will be to prepare a detailed plan for cleaning of the Ganges and to find out ways to rejuvenate the holy river.
Addressing a press conference here today, Minister of Water Resources Uma Bharti announced that four ministries would work hand in hand to cleanse the polluted holy river and make it a hub of spiritual tourism.

“The four ministers would be from Surface Transport, Shipping, Tourism and Water Resources,” she said.
"We will be incorporating ideas as and when required. Ganga is on our top priority. It is not that we are not prioritising other rivers but we will have to create a model first which can be replicated elsewhere," Bharti added.

The meeting, presided by Union Minister for Surface Transport and Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari, was attended also by ministers for Environment, she added.

As per the plan, the stretch between Varanasi and Hoogly will be developed for navigation.
