New Delhi: Law Minister Kapil Sibal said on Monday that the government could step in if Justice AK Ganguly, who has been accused of sexual harassment by a law intern, doesn`t resign.
Earlier in the day, Sibal tweeted: "Waiting to see when and how the Supreme Court rises to the occasion to deal with Justice Ganguly.”
His remarks on the microblogging site came days after he questioned the decision of the apex court not to take further action against Justice Ganguly just because he has retired, saying the issue cannot be "brushed under the carpet".
Talking to reporters outside Parliament, Sibal said: "We hope that the Supreme Court takes action in the case of Justice AK Ganguly in the same way as it takes against a normal man when the security of women is in question.”
"So, I hope the court will take action no matter who it is, whether he is a retired judge of the court," he added.
The reaction follows after Additional Solicitor General Indria Jaising revealed the law intern`s affidavit, sparking off fresh demands for Ganguly’s resignation as chairman of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WBHRC).
In her affidavit to a three-judge panel set up by Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam to go into her allegation that Justice Ganguly had sexually harassed her in a hotel room on December 24 last year, the intern has described in detail his alleged behaviour when she had gone to assist him in his work.
Justice Ganguly has strongly denied the allegations and refused to step down as WBHRC chief.
