New Delhi: A suspected Indian Mujahideen (IM) operative, who was also accused in the Patna blasts in October last year, has been remanded in police custody till May 7 by a Delhi court in connection with a case of allegedly setting up an illegal arms factory here.
Imteyaz Alam, who was allegedly instrumental in triggering the October 27, 2013 Patna blasts at Gandhi Maidan where BJP`s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi was scheduled to address an election rally, was produced before the court here in purusance to the production warrant issued against him.
The Special Cell of Delhi Police arrested Alam, who was allegedly associated with Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), after he was brought before the court from a Patna jail.
The police sought his custodial interrogation, saying that IM`s top operative Tehsin Akhtar alias Monu had disclosed that Alam had earlier given him logistic support in Ranchi.
The police told the court that Akhtar, who was recently arrested, had told the interrogators that after the arrest of alleged IM operative Quateel Siddiqui in November 2011, he had met Alam and one Haider and they had provided him a hideout in Ranchi. Siddiqui had died in Pune`s Yerwada Jail in 2012.
"During interrogation, accused Tehsin Akhtar has disclosed that after the arrest of Mohd Quateel Siddiqui in this case (illegal arms factory case), he had met one Haider alias Black Beauty and Imteyaz Alam who had also joined IM.
"These persons had later provided him a hideout and other logistics support in Ranchi. Imteyaz had also assured him for recruitment of youngsters for IM," the police said.
The police claimed that Akhtar had also stayed at Alam`s house in Ranchi and he was "much impressed" by the ideology of Akhtar and later on he joined IM.
Seeking his custodial interrogation, the special cell said that Alam could help them in tracing the hideout of Haider and he was to be confronted with Akhtar regarding acquaintance with other members of the IM`s Ranchi module.
The court allowed the plea of the police and remanded Alam in its custody till May 7.
