Increase in Railways revenue despite fall in bookings

Maintaining its sustained growth rate, the Indian Railways witnessed a four percent increase in revenues in the first ten days despite a marginal fall in passenger bookings.

New Delhi, Jan 21: Maintaining its sustained growth rate, the Indian Railways witnessed a four percent increase in revenues in the first ten days despite a marginal fall in passenger bookings.
It earned Rs 2,094 crore between January 1 and 10
compared to Rs 2,011 crore earned during the corresponding
period the previous year, an increase of 4.14 percent.

Out of this, earnings from goods traffic during January 1
and 10 stood at Rs 1,471 crore and the earnings from the
passenger front stood at Rs 553 crore despite 0.62 percent
drop in passenger bookings, said a release issued by the
Railways.

About 19.36 crore passengers booked during this period
as against 19.46 crore during the same period the previous
year, the release said, reflecting a drop of 0.62 percent.

Between April and December last year, Railways had
registered a 13.39 percent jump in revenue earnings from
freight traffic, earning Rs 38,279 crore as compared to Rs
33,758 crore during the same period the previous year.

Railways carried more than 600 million tonnes of freight
during the period as compared to 572 million tonnes
transported during the same period in 2008, the release said.

The transported commodities included coal, iron ore,
cement, fertilizers, petroleum oil and lubricant, food grain,
pig iron and finished steel, among others, it said.
