New Delhi, Jan 22: With internal security getting more attention in the wake of Mumbai terror attacks, the Union Home Ministry is restructuring its concerned wing, which will
now have two Joint Secretaries to oversee the work.
The Police Division in the ministry, which is the cadre controlling authority of IPS officers, will also have two Joint Secretaries now in view of increased work pressure, Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta told reporters.

At present both the divisions are headed by a Joint Secretary each.

Gupta said need for having two Joint Secretaries in the Internal Security (IS) division arose in view of heightened pace of activities in the aftermath of the Mumbai terror
strikes.

The newly constituted National Investigation Agency (NIA), a federal organisation that will probe all terror acts across the country, too will come under the IS division.

The Internal Security division looks after the situation in the entire country barring Kashmir and the Northeast, both of which are looked after by different Joint Secretaries.

Work in the Police Division too has increased manifold because of expansion of para-military forces and their deployment at various places.

Creation of NSG hubs and use of CISF for protecting private sector installations are some new measures that will exert more pressure on the Police Division, he said while
explaining the need to have two Joint Secretaries.
