Kolkata July 12: CPI(M) patriarch Jyoti Basu was on Sunday admitted to a city hospital after he fell unconscious at his residence this morning, doctors treating him said.
"Mr Basu had a transient loss of consciousness. He was brought to the AMRI hospital. His condition is stable," Debashish Sharma, Chief Medical Superintendent of the hospital, told reporters.
He said Basu, who turned 96 on July 8, was undergoing tests and a medical board comprising three doctors from the hospital was treating him.
Party sources said Basu had also complained of stomach pain before being hospitalised.
His son Chandan, Transport Minister Subhas Chakraborty, known to be a Basu protege, and former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, who was expelled from the CPI(M), visited the ailing leader at the hospital.
