New Delhi: AICC general secretary Rahul
Gandhi today assured a group of lawyers from Uttar Pradesh
that their demand for a High Court bench in West UP will be
taken up at an appropriate forum.
"We met Rahul Gandhi today to apprise him of our need for
a High Court bench in West UP. Gandhi assured us that he will
take up the matter with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Law
Minister M Veerappa Moily," said Gajendra Singh Dhama,
Chairman of the Action Committee for Establishment of High
Court Bench in West Uttar Pradesh.
The nine-member delegation accompanied by Mustafabad MLA
and Acting Chairman of Central Haj Committee Hassan Ahmad had
also met Minister of State for Minority Affairs Salman
Khurshid last night.
Khurshid had been PCC chief of Uttar Pradesh in the past.
"15 lakh cases are pending in Uttar Pradesh, which is one
third of all pending cases in India. 70 per cent of these
cases are from West UP. The nearest High Court bench for us is
700 to 900 kilometre away in Allahabad and it leads to great
problems for us," Dhama, who is also the President of Merath
Bar Association said.
Dhama said the delegation told Gandhi that sentiments of
the people of West UP are attached with this four-decade long
demand.
"Gandhi said he will also talk in this regard to the AICC
general secretary in-charge for Uttar Pradesh Digvijay Singh,"
Dhama said.
