New Delhi: Members cutting across party
lines in the Lok Sabha today urged the government to consider
extending schemes and programmes that would benefit farmers.

During the resumed debate on General Budget, they said
the government should also ensure that benefits reached the
right persons.

Nishi Kant Dubey (BJP) did not agree with Finance
Minister Pranab Mukherjee that one budget would not be enough
to change the lives of people and resolve their problems.

He sought more focus on development of the eastern region
as most of the raw materials for industries in major cities
came from that area.

Dr Chinta Mohan (Cong) said the NREGA programme of the
UPA has changed the lives of the poor in several states. He
demanded allocation of more funds for Panchayati Raj.

Jayant Choudhary (RLD) said the words "aam aadmi"
(common man) used in the budget had sent out a wrong message
that there were "khaas aadmi" (VIP) too and urged the Finance
Minister to give more for farmers.

Dr Rattan Singh Ajnala (Akali Dal) said population
control would be the best cure to the country`s economic ills.
He wanted better job opportunities in rural areas to
check migration of people to cities.

Asaduddin Owaisi (MIM) said instead of spending several
crores of rupees on Haj subsidy, the funds should be used for
providing scholarships to the minorities students, particuarly
girls.
