Medical college-cum-hospital to come up in Jamia

Jamia Millia Islamia university has proposed to establish a medical college-cum-hospital as part of its road map to expand its educational infrastructure.

New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia university has proposed to establish a medical college-cum-hospital as part of its road map to expand its educational infrastructure.

"The medical college in Jamia is a requirement since there is no government college-cum-hospital in the neighbourhood," Jamia Vice-Chancellor Talat Ahmad told a press conference.

The VC has also proposed to put in place a choice-based credit system within two years, which enables students to move across various disciplines of interest.

Talking about the plan to set up the medical college, he said university already has a faculty of Dentistry and Centre for Physiotherapy and Rehabiliation Sciences.

The announcement to set up the medical college comes a few months after the Supreme Court had allowed Delhi government to acquire prime land in Okhla village for expansion of Jamia Millia Islamia university.

"The Supreme Court has granted us 114 acres of prime land in Jamia`s vicinity in a land case pertaining to the state of Uttar Pradesh and Government of NCT Delhi. We have taken possession of the said land which we propose to use for our developmental projects," Ahmad said.

He said the university will approach Delhi government and furnish details about the funding required for establishing the medical college-cum-hospital with 300 beds.

The university is also aiming to set up a School of Earth Atmosphere and Planetary Science to help understand climate change.

Ahmad emphasized the need to boost research in academic programmes by seeking to increase citations in research work published by the university faculty.
