`Nepal`s help needed to mitigate threat to Kosi embankment`

Bihar Water Resources minister Vijay Chaudhary on Thursday said mitigation of threat perception to the Kosi embankment in the state would be possible only with help from Nepal for which talks were going with Kathmandu.

Patna: Bihar Water Resources minister Vijay
Chaudhary on Thursday said mitigation of threat perception to the
Kosi embankment in the state would be possible only with help
from Nepal for which talks were going with Kathmandu.
Solution to the threat to the Kosi embankment in Bihar
could be found only by reverting the flow of the river to its
original course for which talks were going with Nepal,
Chaudhary told a press conference here.

He suggested that the reversal of the flow of the Kosi
rival to its original course was possible by removing
siltation from Birpur barrage in Nepal upto 13 km route of the
river on its original course.

Chaudhary described the present status of the Kosi
embankment in Bihar as under control.
He said the state government has launched a pilot project
to channelise the course of the river to its original route by
carrying out digging to remove the siltation, but the same was
stopped after opposition by the Nepalese citizens and a ban
imposed by their authorities.

Chaudhary said Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had himself
raised the threat perception to Kosi embankment from overflow
of water from the Nepalese side during the Ganga flood control
board meeting with the Union Water Resources minister Salman
Khurshid yesterday.
