Obama visit indicates India`s strategic importance: Roemer

US President`s visit will be a recognition of India`s strategic importance, US envoy said.

Jodhpur: President Barack Obama`s visit to New Delhi next month will be a recognition of India`s growing strategic importance in the eyes of the US, American Ambassador to India Timothy J Roemer said.

"Obama`s visit signifies the growing strategic importance of India in the eyes of the US," Roemer, told reporters here before winding up his four-day sojourn here.

Noting that Obama is scheduled to spend more time in India than in any of the countries he has visited so far after assuming office, he said, "The US President`s visit will mark a stronger bonding in the indispensable partnership between the two countries."

He said the growing importance of India for the US can be gauged by the simple fact that both Clinton and Bush came to India during their second terms as the President but Obama has made it a point to pay a visit to the country during his first tenure itself and that too just after two years of becoming the President.

"India is getting increasing recognition as a power to influence global interests and this cannot be overlooked," he said.
