Poll expenses hiked for parliamentary, assembly seats

New Delhi: In the backdrop of demands by
political parties, government on Thursday enhanced the election
expenditure of candidates to Rs 40 lakh for parliamentary
constituencies and Rs 16 lakh for assembly seats.

A Law Ministry notification said the "maximum limit" of
election expenses now stood at Rs 40 lakh for parliamentary
constituencies and Rs 16 lakh assembly constituencies.

So far, the maximum limit for parliamentary
constituencies was Rs 25 lakh and Rs 10 lakh for assembly
seats.

The notification, issued in consultation with the
Election Commission, will further amend the Conduct of
Elections Rules, 1961.

While the maximum election expense for most of the
states stands at Rs 40 lakh for parliamentary seats, it is
Rs 27 lakh for Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, Rs 22 lakh for
Goa, Rs 35 lakh for Manipur and Meghalaya and Rs 32 lakh for
Mizoram.

Except Delhi, the expenses vary between Rs 16 lakh and
Rs 32 lakh.

For Delhi, the maximum limit is Rs 40 lakh.
