Quality of Yamuna has not shown desired improvement: Ramesh

New Delhi: The water quality of Yamuna
river has not shown the "desired improvement" in Delhi and in
parts of Uttar Pradesh, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Monday.

"The water quality of river Yamuna is within the
prescribed limits in Haryana. The water quality, however, has
not shown the desired improvement in Delhi and in parts of
Uttar Pradesh...," Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said in
a reply to a written question.

Under Yamuna Action Plan (YAP) Phase-I pollution
abatement works such as interception and diversion of sewage,
installation of sewage treatment plants(STPs), low cost
sanitation, river front development and others were taken up
at a cost of Rs 682 crore in 21 towns in UP, Haryana and
Delhi, he added.

However, the undesired result was due to the large gap
between demand and availability of sewage treatment capacity
as well as lack of fresh water during lean season, the
minister said.

A total of 38 STPs having capacity of 753.25 million
litres per day (mld) have been created under phase-I while
in YAP Phase-II additional 135 mld treatment capacity is
proposed.

"Besides the YAP, Delhi Government has also taken up
sewerage and sewage treatment works on Yamuna under other
schemes. Delhi Jal Board has prepared schemes for laying of
interceptor sewer along three major drains," the Minister
added.
