New Delhi: Rise in minimum temperature brought some relief from virulent cold snap in parts of Northern region while snowfall and rains lashed Kashmir Valley and upper hills of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday.
In the capital city Delhi, where the sky remained cloudy throughput the day, the minimum temperature rose to 6.5 degree Celsius from yesterday`s 4.4 degrees Celsius, bringing some relief from the chilly night.
As cloud cover persisted throughout the day, the maximum temperature settled at 18 degree Celsius in the capital.
In Kashmir Valley and Ladakh region, the mercury appreciated at most places due to overcast condition and intermittent snowfall.
Snowfall continued intermittently across the Valley, including its summer capital Srinagar, during the night with Z-Gali in frontier district of Kupwara recording the highest four feet of snow.
Srinagar which experienced about two inches of fresh snow, recorded a low of minus 1.9 degrees Celsius as against yesterday`s low of minus 1.7 degrees Celsius.
The famous ski-resort of Gulmarg, which recorded 1.5 feet of snow, was one of the coldest recorded place in the Valley with a low of minus 7.0 degrees Celsius.
In the plains also, minimum temperature rose in most parts of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.
Punjab and Haryana also got some relief from fog though misty conditions prevailed this morning.
Barring Amritsar, which continued to reel under severe cold recording a minimum of 1 deg C, temperatures at other places have shown a marginal increase.
Hisar and Narnaul in Haryana also recorded an increase in minimum temperature. Both towns today recorded respective lows of 5.8 deg Celsius and 5.6 deg Celsius.
Chandigarh recorded a low of 7.2 deg C.
Due to the ongoing western disturbances in Jammu and Kashmir, rains lashed some parts of Rajasthan with Sawaimadhpur recording the maximum rainfall of 1.6 mm, and Jaisalmer 0.2 mm.
People in Jaipur woke up to overcast skies and were relieved as the night temperature in the Pink city rose from 5.7 to 13 degrees Celsius.
The western disturbances are expected to pass in next 24 hours following which the cold conditions may revive, the MeT officials said.
In the hill state of Himachal Pradesh, high altitude tribal areas received intermittent snowfall while mid and lower hills received widespread rains.
Avalanche threat loomed large over high altitude tribal areas as mercury rose marginally in the tribal valleys.
Udaipur and Keylong in Lahaul valley recorded 20 cm and 10 cm of snow while Kalpa in adjoining tribal district of Kinnaur had 10 cm of snow.
Keylong and Kalpa recorded minimum temperatures at minus 5.1 degree and minus 3 degree, while Dalhousie recorded a low of minus 1.0 degree and zero degree, followed by Shimla 0.7 degree, Bhuntar 3.0 degree and Hamirpur 3.1 degree.
Maximum temperatures remained moderate in the region with Una recording a high of 18 degree, Shimla 11.2 degree, Manali 7.6 degree and Kalpa 2.2 degree.
