Shameful chapter in Indian democracy: Jaitley

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arun Jaitley on Sunday described the crackdown on yoga guru Baba Ramdev`s anti-graft fast as "a shameful chapter in the history of Indian democracy".

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arun Jaitley on Sunday described the crackdown on yoga guru Baba Ramdev`s anti-graft fast as "a shameful chapter in the history of Indian democracy".

"What happened last (Saturday) night at the Ramlila Ground is a shameful chapter in the history of Indian democracy. It was a barbaric act by the police against citizens who were protesting peacefully against corruption and black money," said Jaitley, the leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha.

Police cracked down on Ramdev and his supporters in New Delhi`s Ramlila Ground after midnight Saturday and forcibly removed the yoga guru from the site. He was then evicted from the capital.

"Government did not act against Kashmir`s separatists who held meetings in the heart of Delhi. How can the attack on Ramdev be justified," he asked.

Hitting out at Congress leader Digvijay Singh for his "thug" remarks against Ramdev, Jaitley said: "The Congress leader using bad language against Baba Ramdev is known for his idioms that lower the level of democracy. This language is unacceptable in politics."
