'PM Modi insulted nation by not naming airport after Bhagat Singh'

Congress leader Jagmeet Brar on Saturday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of "insulting" the nation by not naming the new terminal at Chandigarh airport after freedom fighter Shaheed Bhagat Singh.

Chandigarh: Congress leader Jagmeet Brar on Saturday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of "insulting" the nation by not naming the new terminal at Chandigarh airport after freedom fighter Shaheed Bhagat Singh.

"PM Narendra Modi has insulted the entire nation by not naming the International airport after the great martyr Bhagat Singh yesterday," Brar said in a statement issued here.

Former Congress MP said if the cellular Jail in Andaman and Nicobar Island can be named after Vir Damodar Savarkar, why was the airport in Punjab not named after the heroes of the freedom struggle.

Prime Minister yesterday inaugurated the state-of-the-art new civil air terminal building at Chandigarh Airport, which will handle both domestic as well as international flights.

Notably, Punjab government had been demanding that the airport be named as 'Shaheed-e-Azam Sardar Shaheed Bhagat Singh International airport, Mohali'. Punjab Assembly unanimously had passed a resolution in this regard.

However, Haryana government had objected to 'Mohali' word and insisted on keeping its name after Chandigarh.
