New Delhi: Crude paintings found inside Gorham's cave in Gibraltar is a major contribution in making scientists believe that Neanderthals had great artistic expression.

The painting consists of criss-crossing lines much like abstract pattern which resembles like Twitter hash tags.

What makes the Gorham's cave paintings important is that it gives a belief that modern humans and Neanderthals may have co-existed for thousands of years. The paintings also provide stronger evidence of the fact that Neanderthal had great intellectual abilities.

The study is published in the PNAS journal.
