Japan reduces greenhouse gas emissions

Japan reduced greenhouse gas emissions in fiscal 2014 for the first time in five years, the environment ministry announced on Friday.

Tokyo: Japan reduced greenhouse gas emissions in fiscal 2014 for the first time in five years, the environment ministry announced on Friday.

The ministry said Japan released 1.365 billion tonnes of global warming gases in the year until the end of March 2015, public broadcaster NHK reported.

It is a decrease of 43 million tonnes, or three percent from the same period in the previous year.

The ministry attributed the decrease to power saving and using renewable energy in households and businesses after the March 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster.
