Washington: Paleoanthropologists are exploring a Rising Star Cave at a site in South Africa, dubbed the ` Cradle of Humankind,` to find early humans` fossilized specimens.
The site is located about 25 miles north of Johannesburg.
The site, one of the richest fossil sites in Africa, was called a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
Over the weekend, researchers visited the cave to look for our ancient relatives` fossils, LiveScience reported.
They discovered several hominid fossils, which includes a mandible, which forms part of the lower jaw.
The researchers will now retrieve the hominid fossils, and this work is going to involve squeezing through a small opening measuring just about 7 inches across, then descending about 100 feet underground.
National Geographic explorer-in-residence Lee Berger and his colleagues are going to begin analyzing the specimens once the fossils have been removed from the cave.
