Peshawar: A policeman guarding a Hindu temple was on Sunday shot dead by two motorcycle-borne unknown assailants in this restive northwestern Pakistani city.

Constable Ghulam Mohammad was performing his routine duty at Jhanda Bazar Hindu temple when two unidentified persons opened fire on him, severely injuring him. He later succumbed to his injuries.
Faisal Mukhtar, the city`s police superintendent said the two assailants came on a motorbike and shot the policeman.

Police said they are investigating the case.
Authorities do not have a motive for the attack.

The attack is reminiscent of a November attack in Peshawar where a police officer was shot dead while he was guarding a church.

In September, two suicide blasts at another church in the city killed more than 78 people and injured 100.
