Kathmandu: Indian community in Nepal
have joined local people in celebrating Vijaya Dashami, the
biggest festival in the country.
Around 300 Indians including diplomats, businessmen
and others participated in the celebrations to mark Viyaya
Dashami and Durga Puja.
Sarbojini Durga Puja Committee has organised a
five-day long programme to observe Durga Puja from October 13
to 17 at Galaxy School premises for the 23rd year.
Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Rakesh Sood said
that Nepal and India are inter-linked through culture,
religion and geography.
Such kinds of festival further strengthen the people-
to-people relations between the two countries, he pointed out.
Sood along with newly appointed Deputy Chief of the
Mission Jayadeep Majumdar also expressed best wishes to the
Indian communities on the occasion.
Meanwhile, Nepalese people are enjoying their
week-long holidays with great enthusiasm. They are worshipping
at temples of Goddess Durga, Bhagwati and Kali, preparing a
variety of dishes, flying kites and playing cards.
Sacrifice of animals at temples, government offices
and homes is part of the Vijaya Dashami rituals.
However, the number of people sacrificing goats and
chickens at temples and homes have considerably declined this
year with the campaign by animal rights groups against such
practice.
Nepalese President Ram Baran Yadav, Prime Minister
Madhav Kumar Nepal, other ministers, Chief Justice and Army
Chief also attended yesterday`s function.
