Chennai: In yet another of incident of sheer cruelty towards animals, at least 50 stray dogs were recently burned alive at a Keezhamur village, some 50-kms from Chennai, a report said on Wednesday.
According to a 'Times of India' report, the incident took place on June 5.
These stray dogs were sedated with food laced with pesticides. The villagers decided to kill the dogs to save their herds of sheep and goat from being attacked by them.
The matter came to light after a villager informed an animal activist, P Aswath, who uncovered the tragedy four days later.
Aswath then registered a case with the Melmaruvathur Police after which four villagers - Murali, Muthu, Murugadoss and Jeeva – were booked in connection with the case.
After its investigation, the police said the villagers claimed a few community dogs injured a few sheep and goats when they were grazing. Some of the injured cattle died of dog bites later.
However, Aswath said there were no traces of sheep and goat maimed or injured in a dog attack.
Based on his findings, Aswath claimed that the dogs were poisoned and doused with kerosene before being set on fire.
