Cairo: An Egyptian court on Sunday sentenced 23 Islamists to life in prison for killing 4 people during the 2013 violence in the country.

The 23 defendants, include the son of Muslim Brotherhood leader Saad el-Husini, were accused of violence in the delta city of Tanta following the dispersal of sit-ins by police in August, 2013.

The defendants were also accused of killing 4 citizens in the city during clashes at that time.

Thousands of supporters of Islamist ex-president Mohamed Morsi as well as Muslim Brotherhood leaders and members have been rounded up and put on trial since the army ousted Morsi in July, 2013 following massive street?protests against his rule.

Morsi himself is currently in prison facing a number of charges including killing peaceful protesters, espionage, escaping from prison during the Egyptian Revolution in 2011, and insulting the judiciary though he has not been sentenced in any case so far.
