Any deal with Iran must withstand world's scrutiny: Kerry

Montreux: US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Wednesday any final deal to curb Tehran's nuclear programme would have to withstand global scrutiny, as he wrapped up talks with his Iranian counterpart.

"The purpose of these negotiations is not to get any deal, it's to get the right deal, one that can withstand scrutiny," he told reporters in the Swiss lakeside town of Montreux, a day after Israel's leader slammed an agreement he said would not stop Iran from getting a nuclear bomb.

"From the beginning these negotiations have been tough and intense and they remain so," Kerry added after holding three days of talks with Mohammad Javad Zarif.

His comments came a day after Benjamin Netanyahu made a dramatic speech to US Congress, warning that an agreement that was "supposed to prevent nuclear proliferation would instead spark a nuclear arms race in the most dangerous part of the planet".
