Washington: US President Barack Obama on Tuesday held a meeting with the senators and asked them to not propose new sanctions on Iran for now and permit the world powers to negotiate a nuclear deal.
Obama reportedly said a peaceful resolution that prevents Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons is in America`s national security interest.
The meeting between Obama and the senators was held on Tuesday at the White House, a day ahead of talks between P5+1 powers and Iran which is hopeful of reaching a deal that would put a hold on Tehran`s nuclear programme.
Obama asked the senators to hold off levying more sanctions on Iran and let the world powers work on a deal with Tehran.
The US President further said that the new sanctions can be levied if Iran refuses to accpet the deal or fails to comply with it later, as per news report.
While Iran has been time and again saying that its nuclear programme is peaceful, US and its allies have alleged that the it is trying to develop nuclear weapons.
The P5+1 are permanent members of the UN Security Council. They are US, UK, France, Russia, China and Germany.
