Cairo: At least one policeman has been killed when a homemade bomb planted by unknown people exploded in Egypt's Gharbia governorate.

The incident took place during a checking carried out by security forces following an explosion at a farm in the governorate. They found tools used in making bombs and other devices.

The bomb exploded when one of the policemen was detecting the devices at the farm, killing him on the spot, a statement by the Ministry of Interior said yesterday.

Three suspects managed to escape in a private car following the first explosion, the statement added.

Meanwhile, a security source from the Ministry of Interior said that the death of the policeman has raised the number of cops killed since January 2011 revolution until now to 653, according to Youm 7 Arabic news website.

The attacks targeting police and military personnel shot up after the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

The military has launched security campaigns in the area, arrested suspects and demolished houses that belonged to terrorists, including those facilitating tunnels leading to the Gaza Strip.
