Athens: Aylan Kurdi - the three-year-old boy who died from drowning in the Aegean Sea along with his elder brother and mother while on way to the Greek island of Kos - had “daddy” on his lips when he breathed last.

Aylan's distraught aunt Tima Kurdi has told The Times that as her brother, Abdullah, battled to save his child from drowning, the little boy begged him not to die.

Tima said Abdullah battled in vain to save his wife and two children after their dinghy capsized early on Wednesday.

The only thing he could do was watch his beloved family die one by one.

"When the boat flipped upside down and the waves kept pushing him down, those two boys were in his arms," Kurdi told the UK daily.

"He said he tried with all his power to push them up above the water to breathe and they screamed 'Daddy, please don't die'. "

Aylan's body later washed up ashore on a Turkish beach, and the images clicked after that made millions cry across the world.
