Mohammed Morsi`s family meets him in prison

The wife and two sons of Egypt`s ousted president Mohammed Morsi have visited him for the first time in prison since he was toppled by the military in July.

Cairo: The wife and two sons of Egypt`s ousted president Mohammed Morsi have visited him for the first time in prison since he was toppled by the military in July.

During the hour-long meeting yesterday, Morsi received a bag that contained some clothes and foods, fruits, mineral water and soft drinks, media reports said.

The visit came after the Interior Minister allowed all prisoners to meet heir relatives on the occasion of the Hijri New Year.

Morsi, Egypt`s first democratically-elected president, was ousted by army on July 3 after mass protests against his regime. He had been detained at an undisclosed location since then.

Morsi, 62, was taken to the prison on Monday after appearing in court with seven other defendants to answer charges that he had incited the murder of anti-regime demonstrators.

The court session was Morsi`s first public appearance since his ouster more than four months ago. Trial proceedings were postponed by almost two monthsand now slated to recommence on January 8 after defence lawyers requested more time to examine documentation related to the case.
Morsi, for his part, has refused to recognise the trial`s legitimacy and has refused formal legal representation.
At Monday`s court session, the ousted leader told the presiding judge that he still represented "Egypt`s legitimate president."
