Wellington: Sweden has been reportedly collaborating with the US in spying on Russia, documents leaked by whistleblower Edward Snowden revealed.

The documents obtained by Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald , leveled the latest allegations against Sweden as part of the trove of data exposing the alleged mass surveillance programmes.

Greenwald tweeted that the close relationship between the US and Sweden could not be `overstated` and that this was the first of many revelations to come, stuff.co.nz reports.

The document dated April 18 stated that Sweden`s National Defence Radio Establishment (FRA), which conducts electronic communications surveillance, had helped in providing the US with information on Russian high-priority targets , such as leadership, internal politics," it quoted the document saying.

Meanwhile, Sweden`s Defence Minister, Karin Enstrom said that the country cooperates with some other countries but did not specify its alley.

Another document asked high-level NSA employees to thank Sweden for its continued work on the Russian target, the report added.
