Beirut: An al Qaeda-linked rebel group in Syria reportedly beheaded a fellow extremist by mistaking him to be an Iraqi Shia fighting on the Bashar al-Assad’s regime side.
The gruesome video was posted online in which members of Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) showed severed head of a bearded man.
But the other rebels of Ahrar al-Sha group, after watching the video, recognised the beheaded man as one of their commander Mohammed Fares Maroush, an anti-government fighter.
The ISIS group later admitted that the fellow rebel was killed mistakenly and stated that one of its man who decapitated him has been arrested.
According to reports, Maroush was wounded while fighting regime forces east of Aleppo and was shifted to a hospital for treatment. Reports also claimed that at the hospital he was misunderstood by the ISIS fighters when shouted the names of two venerated Shia imams.
The fighters assumed that Maroush was a government fighter. The ISIS group have reportedly asked for forgiveness after beheading incident.
A United Nations report said that over 100,000 people have been killed since the unrest in Syria began in 2011.
