Unidentified gunmen opened fire at a museum near Tunisia Parliament, killing at least seven foreign tourists and a Tunisian, reports said.

  • Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi condemned the "appalling" terror attack in Tunisia and said India stands firmly with the people of that country in this hour of grief.
  • United States denounced attack on Tunisia`s national museum and vowed to stand with the Tunisian people.
  • UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon condemned what he called the "deplorable" attack on Tunisia`s national museum.
  • Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi has assured that measures have been taken to prevent any new attacks.
  • PM Habib Essid has told that 21 people have got killed in the attack, as per PTI.

  • It is now believed that there were five attackers, of which two have been killed while three are still on the run, says the PM.

  •  The PM added that among those injured were 22 tourists, and two Tunisians.

  • The death toll has now shot up to 19, with 17 foreigners, two Tunisians and two terrorists, the Mirror quoted the PM as saying.

  • The PM said that Italian, Polish, German, and Spanish nationals were among those killed. He didn't mention any British casualties as reported earlier. 

  • Calling the attack on Tunisian museum a big calamity, PM Essid said, "The fight against terrorism is a long battle. We must stand united and take responsibility for fighting terrorism".

  • Newly sworn-in Tunisian Prime Minister Habib Essid is addressing the nation now.

  • British, French, Spanish and Italian tourists are said to be among those dead, added the Mirror report.
  • According to a report in the Mirror, the death toll has increased to 15 as security personnel may have recovered more bodies after the operation ended.
  • Tunisian Interior Ministry has confirmed that the police operation at the museum is now over. Two militants, one policeman and eight civilians are among the dead, it added.

  • According to latest reports, security personnel have killed two militants inside the museum. One policeman was also killed during security operation at Bardo museum after attack, according to officials.
  • Tunisian TV flashes video of many hostages being rescued out of the museum through one of the back doors as security services pointing rifles stood guard.
  • Also, some of the images posted on Twitter showed the images from inside the museum that showed dozens of people squatted in a room.

 

 

  • Tunisian state television is running live images from Bardo museum showing the frantic evacuation there. A twitter handle by the name of Emma@tornada posted some of the images.

 

 

  • The site of attack has been cordoned off and anti-terrorism men have entered the museum.
  • Reportedly, there were three gunmen donning military-style who took hostages inside the museum.
  • The shooting in Tunisia comes soon after there were reports of gunfire at a shopping centre in Danish capital Copenhagen, which injured two. It is too early to say if there is any link between the two attacks.
  • "A terrorist attack (has hit) the Bardo Museum," Mosaique FM radio cited a statement by Interior Ministry spokesman Mohamed Ali Aroui.

  • The attack happened at the Bardo museum, not far from the Parliament, which was soon evacuated as gunfire was heard. At least 200 were present at the museum at the time of the attack, and two explosion were heard, reported Tunisia's Radio Mosaique FM.

According to a BBC report that cited Tunisia's state TV, many people have also been taken hostage.
