Washington: US presidential hopeful Donald Trump was trolled on Twitter after he tweeted an image of one of his massive crowds with a quote attributed to Mahatma Gandhi.

The image read: "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."

There is no record that Gandhi ever said such a thing. In fact, the Christian Science Monitor cited the quotation as one of the "10 most famous things never actually said".

The CSM reported that the quote aligns more closely to trade unionist Nicholas Klein, Politico reported.

Speaking at a clothing-workers' convention in 1918, Klein hailed the growing power of unions, and uttered a version of the famous words later attributed to Gandhi, with the exception of the last line: "First they ignore you. Then they ridicule you. And then they attack you and want to burn you. And then they build monuments to you. And that is what is going to happen to the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America."

It is not the first time an historical quote has tripped up Trump.
