United Nations: Yemeni President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi again pressed the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday to pass a binding resolution to halt the advance of Shiite Huthi militias on Aden, where he has taken refuge.
In a letter addressed to the current French presidency of the council, Hadi paints a dark picture, raising concerns that Al-Qaeda will "seize the current instability to spark further chaos."
He also referred to an unspecified "missile capability looted from the legitimate authority," and asked the Security Council to take control of the missiles.
Invoking the UN principle of individual or collective self-defense, the president called for the council to pass a "binding resolution" under Chapter VII of the UN Charter.
He asked that the measure invite countries to "provide immediate support for the legitimate authority by all means and measures to protect Yemen and deter the Huthi aggression expected to occur at any hour from now" in several strategic cities, including Aden.
Hadi fled to Aden after escaping house arrest in the capital Sanaa last month.
The council has so far only released a declaration of support for Hadi, during an emergency meeting the president requested Sunday.
Diplomats on the council said no new meeting has been planned at this time.
In his letter, Hadi said he had asked Gulf Cooperation Council members and other countries that belong to the Arab League to provide "immediate" support, including military intervention to help battle the Huthi militia.
The militia, backed by troops allied to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh, earlier clashed with forces loyal to Hadi in at least two southern provinces as they pushed on Aden.
