26/11 Mumbai terror attacks: Key places attacked by Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorists

The epicenter of the Mumbai attacks was the iconic Taj Mahal Palace hotel where thirty-one people died. Four gunmen walked in with assault rifles and sprayed the guests and hotel staff with bullets and held a 60-hour siege.

Nearly 200 people were trapped in the hotel as terrorists attacked the Oberoi hotel. Huge flames billowed from the floors as the terrorists exploded grenades and set the roof on fire. Helicopters were seen buzzing overhead the hotel as crowds cheered the commandos who entered the premises with their faces blackened. By the time the terrorists were neutralised, approximately 30 people had lost their lives.  

The Nariman House, housing the Chabad House, was one of the main targets of the attack. Among the victims brutally killed in the indiscriminate firing and grenade attacks were the then Nariman House Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his pregnant wife Rivka, and two other Israelis, an American and a Mexican, all Jews, besides Indian security officials. However, their two-year-old old toddler son, Moshe was saved by his Indian nanny, Sandra Samuels, and a few days later they were flown off to Israel. On the 10th anniversary of the attacks, Chabad House will be renamed as 'Nariman Light House'.

At around 9.30 pm on November 26, the restaurant was attacked with gunfire and grenades by two men later identified as members of the terror group LeT. Leopold lost six customers and two waiters, Peer Pasha and Hidayat Kazi, in the terror attack.

Ajmal Kasab, the lone terrorist who survived in the firing, was among the two attackers who opened fire at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. The chilling photo of Kasab with an AK-47 in hand was captured by photojournalist Sebastian D'Souza. The photo played a crucial role in the 26/11 trial, which led to Kasab's hanging in 2012.

One of the most prominent medical centres in the city, the Cama and Albless Hospital resounded with gunshots when terrorists opened fire on November 26. While the hospital staff locked the rooms of the patients, terrorists left the hospital and ambushed a group of police officers. Six police officers were killed including chief of the city's Anti-Terrorism Squad Hemant Karkare.
