PM Modi flies to US in Air India One, here’s all you need to know about the VVIP high-tech plane

The state-of-the art retrofitted Air India One is used to fly the President, Vice President and the Prime Minister on international state visits.

New Delhi: The custom-made Boeing B777 VVIP aircraft, with call sign Air India One, was inducted last year to replace the ageing 747 which used to fly the President of India, Vice President and the Prime Minister on international state visits. 

On Wednesday (September 22, 2021), PM Narendra Modi left for his three-day United States visit. During his visit, the Prime Minister will be holding meeting with US President Joe Biden, Vice-President Kamala Harris, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Japanese Premier Yoshihide Suga and some top CEOs. 

This is PM Modi's second foreign trip after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier, the prime minister had flown to Dhaka, Bangladesh in March 2021 in newly inducted Boeing 777 VVIP aircraft. Here are more details about the VVIP high-tech plane:

Air India One has advanced features in electronic warfare suits. It also has the Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures (LAIRCM) which is its own missile defence system that is capable of countering missile threats.

This will be the first Indian aircraft equipped with Self-Protection Suits (SPS) which can jam the enemy's radar signals and also divert the direction of nearby missiles.

Flying range and pilots

Flying range and pilots

The Air India One jet can fly from India to the US without the need to stop for refuelling. Once refueled, this aircraft will be able to fly continuously for 17 hours. The Air India One aircraft is operated by specially-trained pilots from the Indian Air Force.
