The Monday morning started with a pleasant surprise, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached AIIMS Delhi at 6 am to receive his first shot of COVID-19 vaccine.
New Delhi: The second phase of the COVID-19 vaccination drive, which began on Monday (March 1) in India, witnessed a good turnout. This phase is for people aged 60 and above, and those in the 45-59 age bracket with comorbidities.
The Monday morning started with a pleasant surprise, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached AIIMS Delhi at 6 am to receive his first shot of COVID-19 vaccine.
"Remarkable how our doctors and scientists have worked in quick time to strengthen the global fight against COVID-19," Modi said on Twitter, posting a picture of him getting the shot at a government hospital in New Delhi.
Even though the drive was scheduled to start around 12 noon, many elderly people had started queuing up by an hour before at the designated vaccination centres.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly received the COVID-19 vaccine at AIIMS Delhi on Monday morning. The Prime minister’s move, of taking the first shot in the early morning, boosted citizen's confidence in vaccination drive. “The Prime Minister said ‘Laga Bhi Di, Pata Hi Nahi Chala’ (Oh it’s done, I didn't even realise it),” revealed Sister Niveda who gave the PM his first shot.

The former Union minister was administered the Covishield vaccine, which is manufactured by Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) in collaboration with the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik gets first shot of COVID-19 Vaccine
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik took his first dose of COVID-19 Vaccine today at the Vidhan Sabha dispensary. Sharing a picture of him getting inoculated, Patnaik tweeted, “Happy to share that I took my first dose of #COVID19 vaccine today. Grateful to our scientists, health workers for their race against time to deliver the vaccine to people. Appeal to all eligible people to come forward and get vaccinated for a Covid Free Odisha.”

97-year-old man receives COVID-19 vaccine in Karnataka
Other than the political leaders of India, the vaccination drive also witnessed a good turnout of citizens aged 60 and above, and those in the 45-59 age bracket with comorbidities.
Karnataka’s 97-year-old man, Ramaswami Parthasarathy, took his first dose of COVID-19 vaccine at Manipal Hospitals in Bengaluru today. He was the first person to get vaccinated in the state.
