Johannesburg: Australia's new skipper Steve Smith has expressed his confidence over his young side's potential despite the retirement of one of the greatest fast bowlers Mitchell Johnson.
Smith, who is excited for the upcoming opportunities, urged his side to work harder if they want to become the world number one in all formats of the game, Sport24 reported.
Describing Johnson as `one of the great players` in Australia, the 26-year-old said that the pacer had a phenomenal career.
Johnson retired from the game after claiming two wickets for his side in the second Test against New Zealand that ended in a draw.
Johnson's decision to call time on his career came soon after similar moves by fellow Australians Michael Clarke, Brad Haddin, Chris Rogers and Ryan Harris.
Johnson replaced Brett Lee as Australia's fourth highest wicket taker when he dismissed Doug Bracewell in the Perth Test. Dennis Lillee (355), Glenn McGrath (563) and Shane Warne (708) are the only bowlers to have taken more wickets.
Earlier, Australia had won the first Test of the three-match series by 208 runs against New Zealand in Brisbane. The two sides will now play first day and night match at Adelaide, starting from November 27.
