India fined for slow over rate in losing cause

Bridgetown, March 30: India have been fined for a slow over-rate during their 69-run World Cup defeat to Sri Lanka in a Group B match last week in Trinidad, an International Cricket Council (ICC) statement on Thursday said.

The defeat effectively sealed India`s elimination after they had earlier been beaten by Bangladesh in the group.

Match referee Jeff Crowe imposed the fines after Rahul Dravid`s side was ruled to be one over short of their target in the match on March 23.

Under ICC rules, players were fined five per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time with captain Dravid fined double that amount.
