This mind-boggling stat reveals why Virat Kohli has been T20 cricket's king in 2016!

New Delhi: When it came to batting, the last two years clearly belonged to South Africa's AB de Villiers, especially in limited-overs cricket.

With the turn of 2016 however, Virat Kohli appears to have dethroned AB at least in T20 cricket.

On Saturday, the Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper endured his first failure of IPL 2016.

Despite not making an impact against SunRisers Hyderabad, the right-hander managed to reach a significant milestone during his 14-run knock.

The 27-year-old reached the 1000-run mark in T20s for this year, becoming only the second Indian to do so.

Suresh Raina achieved the same in 2012.

However, what makes Kohli's effort special is the fact we have only entered the fifth month of this calendar year.

Virat also became the fastest (18 innings) to reach 1000 T20 runs in a calendar year

The Delhi lad's scores this term include 90*, 55*, 50, 7, 49, 56*, 41*, 23, 55*, 24, 82, 89*, 75, 79, 33, 80, 100 and 14.

With plenty more T20 cricket to be played, there is no doubt Virat will open up a significant gap at the top of the highest run-getters' list.
