Auckland: Amid an Australian influx in New Zealand Cricket (NZC), chief executive Justin Vaughan insists that a ‘Kiwi’ should succeed him when he walks away from the job at the end of November.
Australians currently working for NZC include director of cricket John Buchanan, selection manager Kim Littlejohn and assistant coaches Trent Woodhill and Damien Wright.
“I think it should be a Kiwi. We are New Zealand Cricket, we’re about representing our country. There are people from other nationalities in the organization there to drive the very best performance out of our elite area,” Vaughan was quoted as saying by media.
“I always feel if a New Zealander is as good as an overseas person then it ought to be a Kiwi that does the job,” he added.
Earlier, in a statement, Vaughan had cited two main reasons for his departure: the need for NZC to have a CEO who will commit through to the co-hosting of the 2015 World Cup, and the intense travel requirements of the role, which is not ideal with a young family.
“It’s been a hard decision to make, but I’m certain it’s the right time for me to explore new opportunities. I have loved the role and have been privileged to serve New Zealand Cricket,” he had said.
Vaughan was appointed to the position in April 2007, and commenced the job on June 5, 2007, taking over from Martin Snedden.
