Beware Virat Kohli and co! Taskmaster Anil Kumble sets tough rules for young team

New Delhi: Anil Kumble's discipline and dedication towards his craft were perhaps the biggest reasons behind his tremendous success as a leg-spinner.

Despite not being a big spinner of the ball like Mushtaq Ahmed and Shane Warne, the Karnataka cricketer achieved more than what his ability commanded.

In his new avatar as coach, the former captain intends to instill some of those qualities in the young Indian side.

On his first tour, Kumble has set some new and interesting rules for Virat Kohli and company.

According to a report in the Indian Express, players will have to pay up $50 if they are late to the team bus.

Kumble has implemented an open-door policy, wherein any player can walk into his room for a chat on any topic.

Apart from this, there will be an official meeting every fourth day.

The 45-year-old has clearly defined the roles and responsibilities of his support staff. Players can no longer demand service from the masseurs at any time.

They have been given a fixed schedule for this as well.

“Everything is organized. Kumble wants players to understand the importance of discipline and, at the same time, give them freedom. He knows where to draw the line. The Indian team is scheduled to go for scuba diving in the coming days. These small things have been kept for the players to unwind,” a source traveling with the team told the newspaper.

Kumble had discussed some of these ideas with the squad during the preparatory camp held in Bengaluru.

He has also re-introduced the buddy program that was in place during John Wright’s tenure as India coach. Players will now be paired together so that they can help each other improve with feedback, especially after net sessions.
