Germany came close to equalising when a Toni Kroos free kick hit the crossbar by goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

Moscow: A great result for Mexico, Hirving Lozano’s fiery shot clinched the match for his nation. The Central Americans were brilliant throughout the match with their counter-attacks and at the same time held their defence strong, denying Germany the elusive equaliser. The defending champions were all out and heavily attacking in the second-half, but despite creating a number of chances, they failed to make a breakthrough into the Mexican net. Interestingly, the last two reigning champions had exited the World cup in group stages. Germany needs to get their act together against South Korea and Sweden if they fancy their chances of qualifying for the knockout stages.

89 minute: Yellow card! Herrera gets booked for wasting time. 

88 minute:  Germany are continuing to knock on Mexico's door, can Mexico hang-on to take three points from the match 

86 minute: Substitution for Germany! Brandt replaces Werner.

84 minute: Yellow card! Hummels is shown the Yellow card. The Germans are clearly frustrated. 

83 minute:  Yellow card! Muller gets booked. Germans are troubling the Mexicans with their passes up-front. 

80 minute:  Mexico are wasting golden opportunities on the counter-attack. 

79 minute:  The Germans are constantly firing at the Mexican goalkeeper but the latter are threatening to score with the counter-attack. 

76 minute:  Mexico have been brilliant on the counter-attack, that could have easily been their second goal as the Mexican sprints past the German defenders, misses the post by an inch.  

72 minute: Substitution for Mexico. Marquez makes history by appearing in his fifth world cup, as he replaces Guardado. 

71 minute: Reus shoots a bullet but the ball goes past the crossbar. The Germans are giving their best for that elusive equaliser. 

70 minute:  That was close! Mexican forward goes down in the counter-attack, the Referee check for a potential foul. Plays-on. No Penalty!

68 minute:  One cannot keep the Germans quiet for long. They are on their toes. 

67 minute: Substitution for Mexico! Jimenez replaces Lozano. 

63 minute: What an effort!  Germany looking for an equaliser. The German tries to net the ball with a bicycle kick but misses by a whisker. 

60 minute: Substitution for Germany, Reus replaces Khedira. G, on the other hand, opt for an attacking change, their intent is clear. 

57 minute:  Substitution for Mexico, Álvarez in for Vela. Mexico have certainly been on the back foot early in the second-half. Coach goes in for a defensive change by bringing in Alvarez.  

56 minute: MISS!!  Mexico misses a golden opportunity, that could have been their second goal as the Mexican forward misplaces the pass at close range. 

54 minute: Corner for Germany. They certainly do not want to give up crucial three points as most of the attacking has come from the Germans so far in the second-half. 

54 minute: Timo Werner goes on right outside the penalty box but referee does not show any interest.  

51 minute: The Luzhniki Stadium is buzzing with cheers and support to both the teams. Mexico on the verge of staging an upset against the defending champions. 

47 minute: Germany's Marvin Plattenhardt clouds the ball away from the Mexican crossbar. Germans closing in on the Mexican half.

43 minute: Mexico on the charge. Carlos Vela has been on top of his game today, that shot did go wide but Neuer certainly looked nervous with Carlos Vela's fiery shot. 

40 minute: Yellow card! Mexico's  Moreno gets the first booking of the match, for wasting time.  

39 minute: What a great half this is proving out to be. The defending champions are down by one goal and Mexicans are up and attacking. 

37 minute: Germany pushing hard to score after a great effort off a free-kick. 

34 minute: Hirving Lozano scores a stunner! What a goal! Mexico 1-0 Germany. 

30 minute: Germany are giving away way too much space for Mexicans to counter. 

27 minute: Mexico's Carlos Vela is threatening the Germans with his runs on the left flank. 

23 minute: Germany are pressing hard, both teams are looking really good with attack but need to work on their final touch. 

22 minute:  Toni Kross fires the ball from the outside, but straight into the Mexican keeper. 

21 minute: Mexico are forcing Germany to defend deep. Javier Hernandez and Hirving Lozano are looking good up front. 

19 minute: It was a nice first touch by Timo Werner, who took it on a turn but the ball was fired straight into the Mexican goalkeeper. 

17 minute: Former Manchester United player Javier Hernandez opens up the German defence in the box, but cannot capitalise. Germany look under pressure. 

15 minute: Mexicans are up and attacking keeping Neuer busy. But the Germans continue to threaten on the counter-attack. 

13 minute: Another set-piece for Mexico. Good effort by Mexico with another header into the goal but Neuer was alert. 

10 minute: Great effort by the German forwards but Guillermo Ochoa was quick in collecting the ball. 

9 minute: Hector Herrera tests the German goalkeeper, but it falls in place Neuer to make a comfortable save. 

7 minute: Carlos Vela goes down on the edge of the penalty box Miguel Layum gears up to take the free-kick. Clouds it away. 

3  minute: Great atmosphere at the Luzhniki stadium for the high-profile match. 

1 minute: Corner for Mexico. That was close. Manuel Neuer makes a nervous save, he did look in trouble there. What a start!
