Wimbledon 2016: Andy Murray, Roger Federer advance to quarter-finals; Serena, Venus close in on all-sister final

New Delhi: Britain's Andy Murray defeated Australia's Nick Kyrgios 7-5, 6-1, 6-4 to reach the quarter-final of Wimbledon 2016 where he will be up against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Murray, who won his maiden Wimbledon title in 2013, leads Tsonga 12-2 in previous meetings.

The Australian condemned his own performance.

"The first set was OK but after that it was pathetic," said the 21-year-old in a typically surly post-match press conference.

Much to the delight of the local fans, Federer, went equal with Jimmy Connors` mark of 14 quarter-finals at Wimbledon and tied Martina Navratilova`s all-time Slam record of 306 match wins by seeing off Steve Johnson of the United States 6-2, 6-3, 7-5.

On the other hand, Serena Williams and Venus Williams are on course of yet another all-sister final at the All England Club.

The Williams siblings have dominated at the All England Club for over 15 years, collecting 11 titles between them and appearing in a combined 16 finals.

Four of those finals have been all-Williams affairs, but the last came in 2009.

While Serena continues to be one of the most dominating players in women's tennis, Venus has failed to live upto the expectations in the last several years.

World number one Serena, with six Wimbledon crowns to her credit, will play Russian 21st seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the last eight after the defending champion romped to a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Russian 13th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Five-time champion Venus takes on Kazakhstan`s Yaroslava Shvedova after becoming the oldest Wimbledon women`s quarter-finalist for 22 years.
