The madrassas which are wholly maintained by the state cannot impart religious instructions in terms of the mandate of Article 28(1) of the Constitution of India, the Court said in its judgement.

All government-run madrassas and Sanskrit schools will be closed down by the Assam government and the notification to this effect will be issued in November, state’s Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday.
