Last 15 minutes of landing of 'Chandrayaan-2' are more critical: ISRO

Isro Moon Mission, Chandrayaan 2 is all set for the much-anticipated launch this afternoon after the initial attempt on July 15 was abandoned due to a technical snag. The ambitious second Moon mission of India is expected to lift off from the Sriharikota space station at 2:43 pm. Chandrayaan 2 will take off aboard the most powerful GSLV-Mk-III rocket dubbed ‘Baahubali’. Countdown for the lift-off started at 6:43 pm on Sunday and it will finally end with the rocket soaring into the skies, carrying a “billion dreams” with it, as observed by Isro. On July 15, the launch was called off 56 minutes and 24 seconds before the scheduled blast off at 1.55 am from the spaceport in Sriharikota following a technical problem in the rocket. The glitch had occurred when liquid-propellant was being loaded into the rocket's indigenous cryogenic upper stage engine. On Sunday, Isro said in a statement that all glitches have been removed and the rocket is ready for launch. While Isro makes the final preparations and fills fuel into the tanks of GSLV-Mk-III.

If the mission succeeds, India would be placed among the top four lunar pioneers after the US, Russia, and China.

The Rs 978-crore mission, which was originally scheduled to set off at 2.51 AM on July 15 was rescheduled just 56 minutes before the launch due to a technical glitch. Chandrayaan-2 launch today: How mission will stick to timeline despite delay

The Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft will spend six additional days in Earth’s orbit and 15 fewer days around the Moon before it lands on the day that was originally planned, Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) scientists have said, giving details of how the mission will stick to its timelines despite a week’s delay.

The 20-hour countdown for the lift-off at 2.43pm on Monday began on Sunday evening, six days after the July 15 attempt had to be aborted with just 56 minutes and 24 seconds left on the clock. The delay was forced by a leak in the engine of the GSLV-MkIII rocket that is to carry the Chandrayaan-2 into space.
