French Open: Emotions run high on mixed day at French Open

Top guns like Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal had easy outings at the 2021 French Open in Roland Garros on Tuesday (June 1), a day after women's world No. 2 Naomi Osaka dropped a bomb by withdrawing from the year's second Grand Slam. Russian seventh seed Andrey Rublev is out after losing in five sets to German world number 42 Jan-Lennard Struff. French 14th seed Gael Monfils fought back to win 1-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 6-4 against Spain's Albert Ramos-Vinolas, leading to jubilant celebrations between the popular player and the small number of home fans who were allowed in. Naomi Osaka was fined $15,000 by Grand Slam organisers for boycotting a news conference following her first-round win and the world number two was also warned of possible expulsion from Roland Garros and future majors if she fails to meet her media commitments.
