Uttarakhand glacier burst: Two more bodies recovered, death toll rises to 70

According to the information received from the disaster control room yesterday, one dead body was recovered from Srinagar Chauras and one from Kirti Nagar. Of the 206 missings, 70 bodies have been recovered so far. The rescue and search operation for 134 missing people is underway.

Uttarakhand avalanche incident: Centre reviews status of artificial lake formed in Chamoli

"The Union Home Secretary reviewed the action being taken to allow for more flow to the water and removal of some obstructions which have formed at the site of the artificial lake," said the Ministry of Home Affairs. The Union Home Secretary also assured continued help and assistance from Central agencies to the State Government.

Uttarakhand tragedy: Death toll rises to 62, rescue and search operation underway

The body was found at a coffer barrage of the THDC, it said. With this recovery, the toll in the February 7 disaster has risen to 62 while 142 people are still missing, they said. The number of bodies recovered from the intake Adit tunnel of Tapovan-Vishnugad hydel project where a massive search operation has been underway ever since the tragedy struck still stands at 13.

"Rescue operation temporarily halted in Chamoli district due to a rise in the level of water in Rishiganga river. Orders have been given to vacate the areas downstream," said Ashok Kumar, DGP Uttarakhand. "The water level in the river is rising, people living in nearby areas are being alerted. People are requested to remain alert and not panic," added the Chamoli Police in Uttarakhand.

Live: Bodies of 26 people recovered from different places, says Uttarakhand Police

The glacial burst led to the rising of water levels in the river Rishiganga and washed away the Rishiganga small hydro project of 13.2 MW. It also damaged a bigger one further down the Dhauliganga river being built by state firm NTPC. According to reports, most of the missing people were working on these two projects.

Uttarakhand Glacier burst: Tapovan tunnel damaged; 203 still missing

An ITBP operation to rescue people trapped inside a tunnel near the Tapovan dam is currently underway and heavy machinery, like JCBs, is being used to clear the debris. As per the latest reports, ITBP personnel have rescued all 16 people who were trapped in the first tunnel near Tapovan in Chamoli, whereas rescue operations for the second tunnel is still going on.
