Google India to set up AI research lab in Bengaluru

New Delhi: Search engine giant Google on Thursday said that it will set up an AI (Artificial Intelligence) research lab in Bengaluru.

Speaking at the Google For India annual conference in New Delhi, Vice President and Engineering Fellow at Google Jay Yagnik said that the Bangalore-based center aims to deliver world-class research and bring the benefits of AI to everyone.

This team will focus on two pillars – advancing fundamental computer science and AI research by building a strong team and partnering with the research community across the country; applying this research to tackle big problems in fields like healthcare, agriculture, and education while also using it to make apps and services used by billions of people more helpful, Google said.

The lab in Bangalore will be part of and support Google’s global network of researchers: participating in conferences, publishing research in scientific papers, and collaborating closely with each other.

Google Research India will be led by Manish Gupta, a renowned computer scientist and ACM Fellow, the company added. Professor Milind Tambe from Harvard University will also join the India Research team as Director of AI for Social Good.
